Project Details:

• Goal of the project was to create a scale model of a Geodesic Sphere based on Epcot's Spaceship Earth attraction, creating model support trusts and sphere component. 

• Sphere scale was made in around a 1/100th scale and the trusses were a 1/20th scale. 

• Sphere components was modeled in SolidWorks and modeled using 3D printed joints and wooden dowels. 

• Trusses were constructed of wooden dowels.  

• Using online and in person research, it was determined the Geodesic Sphere is made of large pentagons and hexagons that were then sub-dived into smaller isosceles triangles. The project is focused on the largest pentagons & hexagons. 

• This was achieved by designing 5-way and 6-way hubs that are connected with straight rods at two different lengths. 

• Using an angle of curvature, the pieces are then wrapped to create a full sphere. 

• This was a group project, including the collaboration of 3 other students. 

• Project placed 1st in UCF's 2016 IDEAS Showcase. 

• Analysis was based on Statics.
